We've run the Too Many Puppies project for nine years now starting in September 2016. From this beginning until 30 July 2025 237 dogs have been desexed costing $59,051. We advertised the project in 2016 and 2017 on Facebook and a write up in the local newspaper. Since then the project has been running on a case by case basis.
We help rehome the dogs at the Tasman Pound and we set up this project in the Nelson/Tasman area because we were unable to rehome two dogs from the Tasman Pound way back in 2015. For eight years our project was working and every eligible dog coming into the Tasman Pound was able to be rehomed. For the last 2 years though we're again having a lot of trouble finding homes for our dogs and this is due to the large number of dogs coming down from Auckland.
We're in the same situation as when we first started walking the Pound dogs, we have two girls who're in desperate need of a home, they've been waiting at the Pound for months.
So many dogs in the Auckland Pound are euthanised each week, it's heart breaking. Too Many Puppies contributed $70,000 to Chained Dog Awareness now The Dog Rescue Project and they've told us 187 Females and 116 Males were desexed under the Too Many Puppies banner at a total cost of $84172.50. The dog problem in Auckland is so big and the is growing.
